The bad news is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report premature mortality as a public health issue – more potential life years lost translates not only into more potential danger for us and our families, but for the greater economy as well. But the good news is that it’s been shown again: premature mortality can be prevented with endurance exercise like swimming.

The CDC website describes the benefits of endurance exercise in its Healthy Swimming program.

Swimmers have about half the risk of death compared with inactive people. People report enjoying water-based exercise more than exercising on land. They can also exercise longer in water than on land without increased effort or joint or muscle pain.

And new research from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reports that the risk of premature death decreases with endurance exercise.
