Q: Where did the name “Hüma ” come from?

A: Hüma is based on the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico. Unfortunately, using “Tarahumara” as a name would have been far too long for our gel package, so we chopped it down to “Hüma “.

Q: Is Hüma really 100% stomach-problem free?

A: Yes. We have literally not had anyone have a stomach problem, to include people with extremely sensitive stomachs. Please check out these blog reviews as a reference:

Q: How is Hüma pronounced?

A: Hüma is pronounced “Hoo-mah” (not “Hew-mah”, though German speakers will fight on this one). The umlauts mean absolutely nothing except to make a smiley face. Hüma is happy gel!

Q: What performance benefits do the chia seeds provide?

A: Chia seeds have a long history as an endurance fuel. Ancient Aztec tradition held that an ounce of chia seeds could sustain a warrior for 24 hours. Today, chia is considered a superfood because:

It has more Omega-3’s than any other crop in the world (Omega-3’s reduce inflammation)

It has more antioxidants than blueberries (protecting your body from free-radicals)

It is a complete protein, providing you with all 9 Essential Amino Acids (important for preventing muscle breakdown when exercising longer than 2 hours)

It has 25% soluble fiber. A chia seed can absorb 9-12x its bodyweight in water. This is especially important for Hüma because it creates a small barrier to absorption, which then prevents sugar spikes/flash crashes.

Q: Why does Hüma use Evaporated Cane Juice and Brown Rice Syrup?

A: Sports nutrition research indicates that consuming nutrition with a ratio of 2:1 glucose to fructose increases carbohydrate absorption by the body. Evaporated Cane Juice has a chemical composition of 1:1 glucose to fructose, and Brown Rice Syrup is 100% glucose. Together, they provide you with the ideal 2:1 ratio.

You can get that ratio using other types of simple carbohydrates (maltodextrin and fructose being popular sources), but we decided to only use ingredients you didn’t need a science degree to understand.

Q: Why does Hüma has more sugar than other energy gels?

Short A: it only technically does.

Long A: the best way to replace your glycogen stores is through some mix of simple carbohydrates. Most energy gels use maltodextrin, which doesn’t “count” as sugar… but it’s still a simple carbohydrate.

Hüma uses evaporated cane juice and brown rice syrup. These are nutritious, real food alternatives to fructose and maltodextrin and have similar molecular structures but are required to be labeled “sugar”. Keep in mind that the fiber content of the chia seeds acts as a small barrier to absorption, which prevents a sugar spike and flash crash.

Q: Why are Hüma packages larger than other gels?

A: Hüma gels have a higher water content than other gels, which makes Hüma easier to swallow and digest, but that also means less calories per ounce, so we have to put more gel in the package to get you the 100 calories you crave!

Q: Will the fiber content in Hüma gels cause me to do a porta-potty dash?

A: No. Chia constitutes only about 1/8 of the ingredients, which is little enough to not cause GI distress. In fact, Hüma gels have a fantastic history of being stomach-problem free.

Q: If I eat a Hüma gel, will I win my race?

A: Only if you buy 40 boxes at a time.
