“I couldn’t wait to get off my bike to curse out my coach for making me go so slow,” Felicity Joyce says, describing how she thought her coach’s strategy of maintaining a very low heart in the 2012 Louisville Ironman would backfire.
But that was before she went on to win her age division in the race, thus earning her a coveted spot in Saturday’s Ironman World Championship.
Joyce will join about 2,000 athletes from 50 states and 64 countries, who will swim 2.4 miles, cycle 112 miles, and run 26.2 miles near the iconic lava fields of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
Other competitors in Kona will include defending champion Craig Alexander, who is racing for his fourth title, and Mirinda Carfrae, 2010 champion and 2011 runner-up.
